It is believed that in Prehistorical times there were some residents in this area, who lived in caves dug into the rock. According to the legend, during the Arab domination, there was a small town in the area called Arriadh, (the verjeles) due to the abundance of water and its vegetation. There is also evidence that in 1407 there was a battle between Muslims in the Valley of Arriate and the first written document dates from 1570 where the Villa de Arriate is mentioned in the census of Felipe II. The town depended on Ronda until the year 1661 when it obtained its independence by buying the neighbours the municipal area and its jurisdiction.
Built-in XVII, it has undergone several reforms, being the main one the incorporation of the bell tower in 1964, which is the architectural reference of the town.
From XVII, it houses an image of Jesus Nazareno built-in 1730. It is the headquarters of the brotherhood under the same name, which is one of the oldest and most fervent in the region of Ronda.
It is celebrated on June 28, by a special bull of 1769. During the four days of the art fair, equestrian and religious activities are held.
On October 7, the feast of the Virgen del Rosario patroness of Arriate is celebrated.
The rivalry existing between the two brotherhoods of Jesus Nazareno and Cristo de la Sangre y el Entierro gives greater importance and interest to these celebrations. Holy Week in Arriate is classified as a National Tourist Interest.
The typical cuisine of Arriate is closely related to the products of the area. Among the typical dishes stands out the Cocido Arriateño, in addition to the migas, rabbit with garlic, chorizo in lard, salmorejo etc.
