The festival, featuring over 600 lanterns and 4,000 light points, is a collaboration between Ximenez Group, the Cordoba-based company responsible for the famous lighting on Larios Street, and Lantern Group, specialists in lantern festivals from China.
The Lantern Festival is so much more than just a visual display of lights! It’s an ancient tradition that dates back to the Han dynasty, when lanterns were lit in honour of Buddha on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. Over time, this wonderful tradition evolved into a truly special event, marking the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations, also known as the Spring Festival!
In 2025, Malaga will join in on the fun during a particularly significant year, as it will mark the Chinese Year of the Snake. And there’s more! The event will also include traditional Chinese activities that will make the experience even more special for visitors. From a grand New Year’s parade to calligraphy workshops, lantern-making, and performances of traditional music and dance, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!
